Hi Harriet.  Ghosts (spirits from deceased people) are very real, but usually can not be seen by people.  When a person dies, their spirit lives on, and is free to travel through dimensions and places without being bound to physical boundaries... like walls or fences that would hold people back.  Since ghosts usually live in the spiritual realm, they live in their own realm that is not typically seen by us.  Similar to the way radio stations cannot be heard on your television, but in very rare instances, a television may pick up radio interference, and you may hear a few seconds of a radio station on a tv.
